Graeme Souness urges Man Utd to go for Premier League star over Erling Haaland

Manchester United will need to sign a centre-forward this summer, especially if Edinson Cavani decides to move on when his contract expires at the end of the season.

We still don’t know what decision the Uruguayan will make, but I think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping Cavani stays because losing him would give the manager another headache in the transfer window.

None of us expect Manchester United to break any transfer records this summer – and we need more than one quality addition to mount a title challenge next season, which should be the ultimate aim when the new campaign kicks-off in August.

Former footballer turned pundit Graeme Souness has urged the Reds to make a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane instead of Borussia Dortmund goalscorer Erling Haaland.

“For Manchester United to get closer to Manchester City next season, their priority this summer has to be to sign a top striker and it looks like a few may be on the market,” the former Liverpool player wrote for The Sunday Times. “If they could get either Erling Haaland or Harry Kane, they would become real contenders.”

While I agree that signing one of those players would bring us closer to the top of the Premier League, it would take up a large chunk of whatever Solskjaer has available to him in the transfer kitty. The manager also needs to address problems in defence and midfield, but ultimately it should be his decision on what needs prioritising.

“If you pushed me, I’d go for Kane, who turns 28 this summer, because he’s a proven performer in the Premier League and still has several years left at his peak,” Souness added.

“With Haaland, who is only 20, you will pay a premium for his enormous potential. We’ve seen Kai Havertz and Timo Werner do well in Germany, then come to Chelsea and find life more difficult in England.

“Will Haaland be like that? I don’t think so, because he’s more powerful and aggressive than they are, but he didn’t score in the two games against City and it’s a possibility.”

I don’t think United are really in the running for Haaland, and there’s a belief within circles that Kane doesn’t want to leave London, as revealed on the latest Strettycast.

Only time will tell, but let us know in the comments who you think will sign Haaland this summer?
