Undoubtedly, NJ/NY Gotham FC would have preferred to resume the NWSL season with a win when they shared the points last week with Chicago Stars FC. The Bats were often outplayed, which could be because many players had not played a match in over a month. Nevertheless, the ladies will have a chance to redeem themselves when they return home to play their rivals, the Washington Spirit.
While there are still questions about whether this fixture is a true rivalry, both teams and the NWSL sure like to frame it that way. Hence, getting a win in front of the fans against the D.C. side would be great for Gotham FC’s confidence. Plus, they are trying to sweep the regular season series. The Bats won in the opposite fixture, shocking everyone with the road win.
However, the difference was that some of the star players, like Trinity Rodman, were not available for that match. It will be interesting to see what happens with different players back. In addition, Sports Illustrated Stadium has not been the fortress that the stadium was in 2024. Teams can beat Gotham there, and some points dropped there this season should not have happened.
So, how can the NJ/NY team have a strong game and secure three points at home? The answer might start with Esther González. Gotham FC plays better when she is in the final third, which is not surprising since she is currently the Golden Boot leader. The team will have a higher chance of winning if the Spaniard scores.

Gotham FC will welcome home the international players who played at their continental tournaments this summer. The team will celebrate the ladies, especially Jess Carter and Gabi Portilho, who won EURO 2025 and the Copa América Femenina, respectively. It is also the Keep Her in the Game match, for the Bats will celebrate one year of the program. As such, there will be a lot to celebrate on Saturday.
