There is no better time for NJ/NY Gotham FC to face Chicago Stars FC than the present. The Bats will host the Windy City team this weekend after they had a solid road trip, winning two of three games. In those wins, they beat Angel City FC 4-0 and the Washington Spirit 3-0. Both ended in clean sheets for Ann-Katrin Berger while Esther González scored a brace in each match.
Hence, the hope is that Gotham FC will return home filled with confidence. Not only did they beat Washington last week, a team that outplayed them in 2024, but they will now play against Chicago, a side that has only one win. The last-place NWSL team has surprisingly been struggling this year. They were not expected to be a top side, but more was definitely expected from their solid roster.
In fact, their head coach, Lorne Donaldson, was fired this week, so Gotham will be playing the team at the perfect time. The Stars can easily go on a run based on their talent, so the Bats should try to strike early to ensure that does not happen against them. It is also vital that they are not over-confident and should play against the visitors like they are a top side. But again, it helps that they are facing the Stars during a time of uncertainty and difficulty in securing positive results.
Meanwhile, the home side should try to get more goals out of the attackers. It has been great to watch Esther thrive and score seven goals in the last four games. However, the multiple braces and consistent scoring are probably not sustainable for the whole season. Therefore, others must step up when the Spanish international is unable to find the back of the net. The Chicago fixture is the perfect opportunity for Gotham FC.
