There was a chance for a few players to stake their claims in Thomas Tuchel’s starting line up last night.

The Blues faced Southampton in The Carabao Cup fourth round but needed penalties to knock them out. It was a tough opponent in The Saints, but Chelsea perhaps were noticeably poorer without their strong key players.

There was a chance for Spanish international Saul Niguez to start and play the whole game, after he has had a rough start to his Chelsea career.

The on loan star took a ‘good step’ according to his boss Thomas Tuchel, who says he was ‘happy’ with his performance.

Personally I thought he did OK, nothing special, but it was a slight improvement to what we have seen. I think though if he is to want any chance at all of breaking into this team, he is going to have to start playing a lot better than that, and do it soon.

As reported by Sports Illustrated, Tuchel said on Saul:

“Was a good match, a huge step in the right direction for him. I am happy. We thought maybe he would be struggling with the intensity at the 70th minute but he got better and better, had chances and shots. We thought let’s keep him and give him the minutes. It was a good step for him.”
