Neil Warnock backs Djed Spence to be a success at Tottenham Hotspur

Former Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock while speaking on talkSPORT (h/t football.london) spoke about Djed Spence possibly moving to Tottenham Hotspur and how the 21-year-old would fare in the Premier League.

The ex-Boro manager had a falling out with the young full-back when they were at the North Yorkshire club. The youngster was then sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest where he shone.

Warnock spoke about the run-in he had with the player. The former Boro manager also talked about Spence’s possible move and wished him luck.

Neil Warnock feels Djed Spence will be a good signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

“I had one or two chats with him and a few words were said. So the lads said, he had a bit of a go at me. But I’m glad to see it seems the penny has dropped because, like I said to him face to face, it could go either way.”

“I told him, ‘you could be playing for Bromley next year, or you could be in the Premier League’. It looks like he’s going to be in the Premier League, so good luck to him.”

On being asked where the full-back would thrive, Warnock explained that the 21-year-old was good going forward and would shine in a wing-back role. Conte likes his full-backs to help out in attack so Spence could be a match made in heaven for us.

“I think he’s got to be going forward, he’s got to be in that wing-back role. I don’t really think he can play in a back-four at that level. But, going forward, he’s exciting.”

Spence may have Warnock to thank for sending him to the Tricky Trees where the full-back had an excellent season, helping the side get promoted to the Premier League. The 21-year-old was also named in the Championship Team of the Year for his exploits last season.

Djed Spence will be one of three options for Conte if he signs for Tottenham.

Spence featured 46 times for Forest, playing as a right-back and wing-back. The Nottinghamshire club qualified for the Premier League via play-offs and he was an ever-present name on the team sheet.

If Spence does end up signing for the North London side, Antonio Conte will have various options to choose from. Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty are already at the club. They’ve both had inconsistent starts to their Tottenham careers but showed glimpses of quality as the season came to a draw.

With the goal of the top four secured last season, Champions League football will once again be rejoiced by Spurs fans. It remains to be seen who our Italian manager chooses for a regular spot in the team.

But given the club’s efforts to sign Spence, it would be a waste of time and resources if the deal doesn’t come to fruition. If Conte wants an upgrade down the right-hand side of our defence, our board must back the man and do the needful.
