It’s been revealed just how close Memphis Depay came to joining Liverpool in 2015 before he ended up at Manchester United.

The player is currently representing the Netherlands this summer at the European Championships and is available on a free transfer, though it appears Barcelona could well be in for him.

In the past, though, Liverpool have been particularly keen on him and The Athletic has revealed how a 2015 move came so close to happening:

“The contract would make him one of the highest-paid players at the club. It looked like everything was agreed.

“He really wanted to go. His mind was on Liverpool; a historic club with big ambition. Depay had seen how close the team had gone to the title [in 2014]. The atmosphere at Anfield was incredible.

“It was as good as sorted. The discussion went well. Liverpool’s offer was great, too. There were no problems at all.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Of course, Depay went to Old Trafford and it never really worked out for him.

He could well have moved to Anfield and had similar struggles but, of course, it could have worked out differently for him too – it’s just one of those things that you’ll never really know now.

Depay has, since, had a really productive time at Lyon – he scored 20 Ligue 1 goals last year –  and is one of the figureheads for the Dutch this summer, with it looking as though he is set to leave the French club in this window.

There’s no sign of him heading to Liverpool this summer, of course, but he is a top player and wherever he ends up he should have success.
