Goldson to leave Rangers as Gio challenges defender

It is absolutely the end of an era, of sorts, at Rangers, with around several major players prone to departure.

Steven Davis, Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun are all out of contract and there is no sign of a new deal for either Davis or Balogun, while Goldson has rejected one or two, and McGregor is said to be interested in discussing the path forward with the club. Andy Firth is also out of contract and unlikely to be remaining.

Aaron Ramsey and Amad Diallo, for now, are headed back to their parent clubs.

Meanwhile, Joe Aribo, Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent are all out of contract next summer (deal have been offered), as is Ryan Jack, with the former 3’s futures a little up in the air, while Jack’s injuries and fitness may count against him.

But the one we’re really looking at today is Goldson.

GVB let slip a rare piece of direct information when he admitted the chances of the stopper signing a new deal were ‘small’ and we can plan for life without him.

Goldson has rejected at least one deal, or at the most generous, failed to respond to the offer, and with the season now over and no apparent sign of a signature, Gio decided to go public with that and be direct.

He was challenging Goldson, effectively announcing his decision, and leaving it up to him now if he’s going to change his mind. Gio has left the ball in the defender’s court.

In truth, we don’t like this saga and never have. It began in October 2020, with a deal offered in May 21, and here we are May 22 and still nothing.

Goldson was clearly waiting to see if we won the UEL, which we didn’t, and may have accepted a deal if we had with the riches that come with it, but the sliding doors went differently.

As it is, he’s as good as gone now.

How does that make us feel?

In truth, we’re nonplussed. Thank you for your service, and good luck.

Players come and go at Rangers, and we can’t say Goldson was ever a favourite. If he stays, fair play, but if he goes, it’s no real skin off our nose.

It is, what it is.
