But after some financial difficulties in the late 80s, president Jesus Gil decided that as a cost-cutting measure he would close the youth academy.
It music to Real Madrid’s ears.
Raul had won a national title with Atleti’s Infantil side and was quickly pounced on by Los Blancos, who brought him across the capital.
From there, it was just one straight ascendancy to the top of the game.
Real Madrid’s youngest ever debutant? Check.
Setting up a winner in his first ever game? Check.
Scoring his first goal in the derby aged just 17? Yeah, you guessed it.
It was quickly becoming apparent that Raul could go on to become Real Madrid’s striker for a decade or more and would be bothering the record books come the end of his playing days.
14 years later, that’s exactly what happened.
Playing away at Sporting Gijon, Raul overtook the legendary Alfredo di Stefano to net his 308th goal for the capital club.
And what a way to do it.
