Manchester United have won the FA Cup 12 times in their illustrious history.

But have they ever scored a better goal in the competition than Mark Hughes’s against Oldham 1994? It’s definitely right up there.

Hughes’s poor managerial record (and the fact he managed Manchester City) has sullied his reputation in the eyes of United fans in recent years, but back in the 90s he was one of Europe’s best footballers.

The Welshman came through the youth system at Old Trafford and made his senior debut in 1983.

In 1986 he was sold to Barcelona for £2m but after a disappointing season at Camp Nou, he spent the following year on loan at Bayern Munich before United paid a club record £1.8m to buy him back in 1988.

It was during his second spell in Manchester that his career really took off, and he played in instrumental role in the club winning the 1990 FA Cup, the 1991 European Cup Winners Cup, the 1992 League Cup, and the Premier League in 1993.

The following year, United met Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Having overcome Sheffield United, Norwich, Wimbledon and Charlton en route to the semi, the relegation-threatened Latics were not expected to pose much of a threat to Alex Ferguson’s side.

But United were poor on the day and after the match went to extra-time, former Manchester City full-back Neil Pointon gave Oldham a shock lead.

The Red Devils were on the brink of what would have been one of the all-time great FA Cup upsets until, in the 120th minute, Hughes did this …

The semi-final was replayed at Manchester City’s Maine Road three days later and though Pointon scored again, United ran out 4-1 winners.

And then, an Eric Cantona brace followed by goals from Hughes and Brian McClair gave them a 4-0 win over Chelsea in the final to clinch Fergie’s first ever league and cup double.
