Didier Drogba wasn’t always the most consistent goalscorer, but for the big occasion there was nobody better.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich … semi-finals, finals, away goals – you name it. Drogba scored them all.

And this belter against Tottenham at Wembley was no different.

Frank Lampard initially did well to find the Ivorian up front but before he could even control the ball, William Gallas was in close attention.

Pushed up right against him, arms all over his shoulders, pushing him away from goal.

However, pushing Drogba away from goal wasn’t the easiest of tasks.

He took one touch on his chest. Another to flick the ball past him and find a yard.

Then on his weaker left foot he fired a half-volley past Carlo Cudicini before he could even dive.

The Tottenham fans standing behind the goal were unmoved. Folded arms, hands on heads – silence in pure disbelief.

And don’t forget this was a very accomplished Tottenham team at that moment.

Gareth Bale, Luka Modrić, Rafael van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor were all involved.

But the Blues won 5-1 and this goal – to put Chelsea 2-0 ahead – really set the tone for this result.

Too strong, too quick, too powerful.

This goal was rightly heralded at the time but it doesn’t get nearly enough credit it deserves.

We’re here to change that.
