You could be forgiven for assuming that Cristiano Ronaldo is a free-kick specialist.
The Portuguese superstar has scored a staggering amount of goals in his career (725 to be precise) but his record from dead balls isn’t quite as good as you might think.
In fact, a study conducted by Goal in March 2019 revealed that Ronaldo had scored just nine goals from his previous 174 free-kicks – a success rate of only 5%.
But perhaps the main reason we think of him as such a great free-kick taker is because of a goal he scored for Manchester United back in 2008.
The reigning champions were gunning for a second successive Premier League title when they hosted Portsmouth at Old Trafford on a cold January night.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side took an early lead when Ronaldo scored following a slick one-two with Nani and just minutes later, United were awarded a free-kick some 30-yards from goal.
Ronaldo stepped up, puffed out his chest in a way that would eventually become his trademark, and thwacked the ball hard towards goal.
It was a perfect knuckleball strike and it sailed past Pompey goalkeeper David James and into the top corner.
CR7 scored many wonderful goals in a United shirt, but this was probably his best of the lot.
He may not find the net from free-kicks all the time but most players could only dream of hitting one as sweetly as that.
Viva Ronaldo.
