In a development that could shape Manchester United’s summer transfer window, Mark Goldbridge revealed on The United Stand that United have made the first concrete move for Sporting striker Victor Gyokeres, overtaking rivals such as Arsenal.
“United are the first European club to make a concrete move,” said Goldbridge, citing French journalist Loïc Tanzi as the source. The information stems from PSG’s withdrawal from the race for Gyokeres, with the journalist’s credibility rooted in his connections to the French club. “PSG are out of the race for Gyokeres, that’s what’s happened,” Goldbridge explained, referencing the pattern of PSG’s early involvement in transfer stories, as seen in previous windows with players like Yoro.
While Arsenal have been linked with Gyokeres, they appear to be dragging their heels. “Apparently Arsenal haven’t done that,” Goldbridge noted, referring to a lack of any definitive approach by Mikel Arteta’s side. “So why would he [the journalist] know that Man United have made a move?” Goldbridge asked rhetorically, before adding, “Concrete move to me means we’ve actually done something.”
Despite his scepticism about transfer journalism, Goldbridge was optimistic: “I’m not taking this to the bank… but I have got a slight smile on my face.”
The trust in Tanzi’s report is buoyed by his proven accuracy. Goldbridge listed several examples: “2018, Guendouzi will join Arsenal next week – and he was right. Rabiot to United, he was on that. Konate to Liverpool, he was on that. Henderson to Saudi – he was on that.”
“He’s obviously good,” Goldbridge summarised, noting that Tanzi was also accurate about Thiago’s Liverpool exit.
Interestingly, the potential move for Gyokeres comes amid reported talks with Manchester City’s Liam Delap. Goldbridge pondered the contradiction: “Why are we inviting Liam Delap to Manchester if we’re making moves for Gyokeres?” He offered a possible explanation: “Just because you talk to a player doesn’t mean you need to sign them.”
Still, his preference was clear. “Why can’t we go and get Gyokeres?” he asked. “I think Cunha is a fantastic signing…,” he added, referencing other recent signings under Ineos’ influence at United.
As the club navigates transfer negotiations, Goldbridge reminded fans of the bigger picture – unity before the European final. A viewer commented, “Can I just suggest that all fans forget about the league and just enjoy tomorrow for what it is? Get behind the team.”
Goldbridge agreed, citing Bruno Fernandes: “We can’t be thinking about the Premier League… but in the Europa League, we have done well and that’s what we’ve got to focus on.”
