Manchester United fans were left stunned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent interview with Gary Neville, but none more so than Mark Goldbridge, host of The United Stand Podcast. In his latest reaction, Goldbridge dissected the interview in detail, offering his unfiltered thoughts on what he described as a “shocking and pathetic” performance by Ratcliffe and a failure by Neville to hold him accountable.
From the outset, Goldbridge made his stance clear: “It’s absolutely disgusting,” he said, referring to the timing of the interview given the protests against Manchester United’s ownership. “Thousands of Manchester United fans protesting yesterday and Sir Jim Ratcliffe thinks it’s a good idea to sit down and do an interview with Gary Neville.”

Goldbridge questioned the rationale behind Ratcliffe’s choice of interviewer. “You could have sat down with the 1958 [fan group], you could have sat down with the Manchester United Supporters Trust, but you sit down with Gary Neville?” He accused Ratcliffe of using Neville for a “regeneration project,” branding it “absolutely shocking.”
Goldbridge was particularly scathing in his assessment of Neville’s role in the interview. “You need a lion in the room, not a kitten who wants to get stroked,” he said, suggesting Neville failed to challenge Ratcliffe on the key issues. “I don’t think Gary Neville’s a good interviewer. Tell me I’m wrong.”
He argued that Neville’s approach lacked the necessary intensity. “If you are in a room with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, everybody repeat to me—what’s the first question you’re going to ask? And you’re not going to let go,” Goldbridge declared. Instead, he criticised Neville for opening with: ‘Review your 12 months’. “The first question should have been: Why did you save the Glazers? Why did you rescue the worst thing to happen to Manchester United in 20 years?”

Another major talking point was Ratcliffe’s perceived lack of football knowledge. Goldbridge didn’t hold back: “In my opinion, the guy knows next to nothing about football. And that’s the scary thing.”
He took particular issue with Ratcliffe’s comments about defender Lisandro Martínez needing to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League. “Where’s Chiellini? Where’s Nesta? Where’s Baresi? Have they all been playing golf?” Goldbridge mocked, pointing out that Italian football has long been known for its physicality.
Goldbridge was also left baffled by Ratcliffe’s discussion about Sporting CP manager Rúben Amorim. “He said, ‘When you look at the wage bill, he’s actually where he should be in the league.’ Even Neville was like, ‘What are you on about?’”

One of the most eye-opening revelations from Ratcliffe was about United’s financial situation. “Manchester United, even if we buy nobody, I’ve got to write a cheque for £89 million in the summer,” Ratcliffe stated.
Goldbridge’s response was incredulous. “We are paying £89 million even if we buy nobody?! We’re still paying for Sancho, Anthony, and Casemiro.” He used this as further evidence that the club remains shackled by financial mismanagement.

Goldbridge ultimately concluded that the interview had backfired spectacularly. “It was a PR piece and it backfired. It was pathetic,” he said bluntly. He also dismissed any notion that Neville had salvaged the discussion: “You can give Gary Neville points for asking about the ex-player charity or ticket prices, but he didn’t ask the big question.”
For Goldbridge, there was only one question that mattered. “Why did you rescue the Glazers? Why did you do it? If you didn’t do it, no one else would have, and they’d have been forced out.” He accused Ratcliffe of enabling the continuation of a deeply unpopular ownership, concluding, “At the end of the day, they’re just Glazer employees.”
Goldbridge’s verdict was clear: Ratcliffe’s interview was “bloody pathetic” and lacked the tough scrutiny it demanded. With Manchester United still struggling both on and off the pitch, frustration among fans remains at an all-time high. Goldbridge’s fiery reaction resonated with supporters who feel their club has been let down once again.
