Godden features: 3 August transfers Coventry City will want to emulate before Deadline Day | OneFootball

There are a few August transfers from previous years that the Sky Blues may want to replicate this month, considering how successful those moves were.

Coventry City have enjoyed a fairly decent transfer window, even though they were unable to retain Callum O'Hare.

O'Hare may have left, but the Sky Blues have been able to bring another goalscoring asset in, with Brandon Thomas-Asante making the move from West Bromwich Albion.

With Haji Wright often playing on the left, the signing of striker Thomas-Asante was much-needed and he could be a real asset this term.

In terms of some of their other additions, Raphael Borges Rodrigues could be an excellent asset for the future, Luis Binks is a decent centre-back option to have, Jack Rudoni could be a shrewd addition from Huddersfield Town and Oliver Dovin has arrived as a much-needed goalkeeper option, with Brad Collins and Ben Wilson failing to fully nail down a starting last season.

Doug King certainly hasn't been afraid to put his hand in his pocket to fund some additions and the Midlands club may be keen to make more signings before the end of the summer transfer window to make them as strong as possible for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign.

The month of August has brought them success in the transfer market in the past and below, we take a look at three transfers from that month in previous years that Mark Robins' side will want to emulate.

1 Matt Godden (Permanent - 2019)

Matt Godden was a prolific figure for the Sky Blues, even if he spent a decent chunk of his time at the Coventry Building Society Arena on the sidelines following his move from Peterborough United.

He was an excellent servant in the Midlands, clearly committed and establishing himself as an important first-team asset under Robins, who richly benefitted from having the player at his disposal.

The forward may have moved on but he can definitely be classed as a successful signing, scoring 50 goals in 156 appearances for the Sky Blues during his time at the club.

Thomas-Asante may have come in this summer but with Wright playing on the wing and Fabio Tavares potentially needing a loan exit to win more game time, someone like Godden could be an ideal addition.

If the club is to secure a top-six finish at the end of this term, they need as many goalscorers at their disposal as possible.

Speaking of goalscorers, O'Hare was a major asset in the final third during his time at the club.

He initially moved on loan to the club from Aston Villa in August 2019, and played a part in the Sky Blues' promotion to the Championship, registering three goals and four assists in the league during the 2019/20 season.

If it wasn't for that campaign coming to an early close, he probably would have been even more effective and after signing permanently in 2020, he managed to take his game to a new level.

The only downside of O'Hare's stay is the fact he left for nothing, having run down his contract at the CBS Arena.

He will still be fondly remembered by fans though and bringing in a replacement for him will be difficult.

If the Sky Blues can recruit someone who can be just as effective as the 26-year-old in the final third, that would be a real boost for them.

3 Jacob Murphy (Loan - August 2015)

Jacob Murphy was a real asset in League One for the Sky Blues during the 2015/16 season, proving his worth under Tony Mowbray following his loan switch from Norwich City.

He was a major asset out on the wing and registered plenty of goal contributions, with those contributions helping the club to secure a solid finish.

With Tatsuhiro Sakamoto returning to fitness alongside new additions Ephron Mason-Clark and Rodrigues, some would argue that another wing addition isn't necessary.

However, Rodrigues may not be a key part of the Sky Blues' plans this season and a loanee who can affect games like Murphy did would provide Coventry with even more firepower in the final third.

Whether they address the wing area in the coming weeks remains to be seen though.
