Recalling the moment she received the ball on the edge of the box, Drew Spence smiled and said: “I probably should have went to the corner.”

Having only scored her first Barclays Women’s Super League goal of the season away to Everton at the beginning of the month, Drew added to her tally with a stunning finish in our 3-1 victory over West Ham United in the season finale on Saturday.

Jess Naz reinstated our lead with four minutes left on the clock, after Riko Ueki had cancelled out Bethany England’s early opener at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the Jamaica international sealed the three points with an excellent goal, from the edge of the box and into the top right corner.

The experienced midfielder made 15 appearances in all competitions, where she suffered a long-term injury that kept her out across four months of the season, but she was pleased to end the season on a positive note for herself, and the team.

Talking us through that wonderful strike, which was in the ninth minute of injury time, Drew told us: “The ball just came to me and there wasn’t anyone to my right, so I took a touch to my right, hoped for the best and it went in.

“The experienced side of me should have gone to the corner, but I’m glad we could finish off the game with that and settle for the three points,” she added.

“Everyone tells me that I need to shoot more and that’s probably why I took that shot in that moment, my mum is always telling me that, especially, but I’m happy to get that goal and to finish my personal season on a high.

“I’m also really proud of the girls, the progress we have made this year and what we have achieved, now we get to rest up.”
