On Friday, Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017, announced his retirement from football at the age of just 32.
A Nigeria international, Ikeme made 205 appearances for Wolves and also enjoyed loan spells at the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Middlesbrough and Leicester City along with a number of other clubs.
In June, Ikeme announced he was in âcomplete remissionâ but he has ultimately decided to hang up his gloves after consulting with medical experts.
âThe doctor suggested I should retire after the toll the treatment has taken on my body. I canât really risk trying to come back,â he told Wolvesâ official website.
âMy health is my main thing. I just want to be here for my children, family and friends. In the grand scheme of things, with your life in danger, itâs a minimum price I have to pay to spend the rest of my time with my family.
âIâm happy with what Iâve achieved.â
Goalkeeping can be a lonely profession and those who play the position are known for sticking together and supporting each other. The Goalkeepersâ Union, if you will.
Just hours after Ikemeâs announcement, Wolves posted a video to their official Twitter account in which famous goalkeepers from across the world â including Iker Casillas, Joe Hart, Kevin Trapp, Walter Zenga and many more â paid a touching tribute to their retiring colleague.
Brilliant work everyone. Thereâs only one Carl Ikeme.
