The visitors started the game poorly at the Estadio Hidalgo, and were deservedly punished for some disastrous defending in the 20th minute.

After failing to clear the ball, Gilberto Sepúlveda was dispossessed inside his own penalty area. Nicolás Ibáñez subsequently set up Víctor Guzmán for a relatively simple finish from close range.

The hosts doubled their lead before half-time in almost comical circumstances. A Sepúlveda back pass to goalkeeper Raúl Gudiño took an inexplicable bobble off the turf to wrong foot the keeper and see him inadvertently help it into his own net.

Chivas manager Marcelo Michel Leaño made three changes at the break as Los Rojiblancos looked to claw their way back into the game.

They were thrown a lifeline shortly after the break when a VAR review awarded them a penalty that Ángel Zaldívar converted with aplomb.

As tensions rose, Pachuca manager Guillermo Almada was red-carded in the closing stages for verbally abusing the referee.

Los Tuzos were able to hold on to make it two wins from two, while Chivas were left to curse their luck after that absurd first-half incident.
