Goal Records and Milestones to Watch in 2023/24

The last year has seen countless records and milestones hit across the world of football.

Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane became the all-time top goalscorers for their clubs, Erling Braut Haaland breezed past the Premier League’s single-season record, and Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at five different World Cups.

With the new season just around the corner, there is potential for more records to be broken. Here are several individual accolades to watch out for over the coming months.

Premier League

Callum Wilson is currently on 79 Premier League goals. He hit a career-best 18 last term, despite missing seven games.
Marcus Rashford could also join the 100-club, but only if he delivers his best goalscoring season to date. He is 24 off the milestone – his current personal best is 17, but he is now approaching his prime.

Serie A

Ciro Immobile is almost certain to become the eighth player to hit 200 Serie A goals. He needs six more – he has won the Capocannoniere on four occasions.
Mattia Destro is just nine off a century in Serie A. He has hit this tally five times throughout his career but netted just one last season.
Lautaro Martinez may also fancy himself to bag his 100th in Italy’s top flight. The World Cup winner needs 21 more to reach the landmark – the exact total he got last campaign.

La Liga

Antoine Griezmann is perhaps an outside shout at notching his 200th in La Liga. He would need to produce a return of 26 goals in the league – a big ask, but not one beyond his capabilities.
Veteran forward Cristhian Stuani will reach the 100-mark in La Liga with nine more goals. The Girona man has achieved this tally in each of his last four La Liga campaigns.

Bundesliga

Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry is currently on 81 Bundesliga goals. He has bagged double figures in every single one of his six seasons in the German top tier but has never surpassed 14.

Ligue 1

Given his price tag and reputation, it may come as a surprise that Neymar is yet to notch his 100th Ligue 1 goal. The winger is on 82 at the time of writing from 112 appearances. If he remains at Paris Saint-Germain and stays fully fit, he should hit his target.

Champions League

With nine more, Robert Lewandowski will become the third player to reach 100 Champions League goals after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He bagged five last year, despite Barcelona’s group stage exit.

Europa League

If Marseille land in the Europa League, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will have the chance to become the competition’s all-time top goalscorer. He needs seven more to match Celtic legend Henrik Larsson.

Club Records

Griezmann is closing in on the all-time record for Atletico Madrid. The Frenchman is on 157 goals for Los Rojiblancos, 15 off current holder Luis Aragones.
Marco Reus could break Alfred Preissler’s record for Borussia Dortmund. The former 34-year-old needs 16 more in all competitions – a total he has surpassed five times in his career, but most recently in 2018/19.

Copa America

The current top scorers in Copa America history are Norberto Mendez and Zizinho with 17 each. However, this is seemingly under threat with the upcoming Copa America next summer. Peru’s Paolo Guerrero will draw level with three more at the tournament.
Eduardo Vargas is also just three off equalling the record. The Chilean has notched at least two at each of the last four editions.
Lionel Messi has the chance to make even more history on the international stage next year. Four more goals will take him joint-top of the charts – the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has managed at least four at two different Copas America, and found the net on seven occasions at last year’s World Cup.

Other International

Indian legend Sunil Chhetri has the chance to become just the fourth player to net his 100th international goal, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Ali Daei, and Lionel Messi. The 39-year-old is currently on 92; he has scored eight in 11 outings in 2023.
Neymar is on the brink of becoming Brazil’s record goalscorer. His strike at the World Cup against Croatia put him level with the great Pele – one more will see him take the crown outright.
In a similar position is Qatar’s Almoez Ali. He needs just one more to become the outright top scorer for the Maroons.
Memphis Depay isn’t far off making history for the Netherlands. Six more will take him level with former teammate Robin van Persie – in 2021, he bagged 17 goals in 16 appearances on the international stage.
Andriy Yarmolenko could draw level with Andriy Shevchenko as Ukraine’s record marksman with three more. The winger has scored 45 international goals, but the most recent of these came over a year ago.
Having already broken so many records, Haaland could add another to his growing collection. He is nine behind Jorgen Juve’s tally for Norway.
Mbappe may fancy himself to overtake teammate Olivier Giroud over the next year. The 24-year-old is 14 off the record – he has scored 13 goals for France in the 12 months, including eight at the World Cup.
