Wales needed a win over Hungary to secure their place at next summer’s tournament, and with Slovakia defeating Azerbaijan that became all the more important.
A loss in their final group game would have seen Wales finish fourth of five teams, whereas a win would earn them second and a spot in the automatic qualification places.
It was former Gunner Aaron Ramsey who stepped up the most on the night, with a huge amount of help from fellow Welsh star Gareth Bale. It was Bale who set up Ramsey’s opening goal, crossing for the Juventus man to head home.
After half time, Ramsey found himself in space in the box after a set-piece, and he curled home around the goalkeeper to double his country’s lead.
The midfielder could even have had a third, after a heavily deflected attempted cross from Dan James fell to him in the box, but the goalkeeper made a good save on that occasion.
No hat-trick this time, but by that stage, the man who scored two FA Cup Final-winning goals for Arsenal had already won his team another game on another big occasion. He can now look forward to the Euros.
