Celtic defeated Hearts and Glasgow City were victorious over Partick Thistle as they both booked their spot in the final of the Biffa Scottish Women’s Cup. We had not one, but two games back-to-back in the tournament, both were played at the neutral ground of Falkirk Stadium.

Celtic vs Hearts

The first of the double feature was Hearts up against Celtic. For most of the first half, it was an even split with chances for both sides.

A free-kick on the edge of the box went Celtic’s way early on but Hearts had set up a good wall and the shot was blocked. With some strong defending, the Edinburgh side also had some chances at goal but the scoreline remained the same.

Celtic ramped up the attacking pressure towards the end of the first half but Hearts goalkeeper Parker-Smith kept her cool to make sure her side stayed in the game going into the break.

With the second half underway, Celtic controlled the majority of the possession and a few goalscoring chances were created, but none came to fruition.

Hearts had a good defensive line which kept Celtic frustrated the whole half. Shen had a shot from long range and was comfortably seen out by the keeper.

With nothing separating the two at the full-time whistle, the tie trickled into extra time.

Extra Time

The first half of extra time was very similar to the previous 90 minutes, with Celtic advancing and at three minutes, narrowly missing a goalscoring opportunity by hitting the post. Hearts’ well-structured defence again did well to close down Celtic’s chances.

It wasn’t until the 109th minute we would see the ripple of the net. Wellings for Celtic finally got her team on the scoreboard.

After a drought of goals, no less than 60 seconds later from the restart, Wellings again managed to find the back of the net. The brace in quick succession put the game to bed for the Ghirls and booked their spot in the final.

Glasgow City vs Partick Thistle

The second match of the double feature at Falkirk, Partick Thistle took on Glasgow City. The latter are no stranger to a semi-final and were waiting to see how Partick would fare against the giants of the women’s game.

Unlike the first of the semi-finals we only had to wait until the ninth minute for a goal. A corner kick took a deflection and found the back of the net to give City an early lead.

However, Partick Thistle did not take long to get back into the game. Three minutes later, McCulloch netted the equaliser.

Play continued and so did the goals. Another corner came in but was knocked clear by Thistle, however, not far enough. The ball was refreshed back in and Davidson notched another City.

The back and forth play between the two sides continued, testing both of the goalkeepers. A Shine free-kick for City was gathered by her opposing keeper and Donaldson tried City’s defences as well having a shot, but with it going wide, Alexander did not need to worry.

Second Half and More Goals

Much like the end of the first half, the second saw both teams trying to change the score. A couple of subs for City and a hope of fresh legs would prove crucial.

The scoreline remained the same until the 79th minute where Chinchilla for City powered the ball into the back of the net to see off any hopes for the opposition.
