Giulia Gwinn has been appointed as captain of the German women’s national team, Sky Sports has reported.
The decision to give the 25-year-old the skipper’s armband was announced by national team head coach Christian Wuck after a training session on the DFB campus in Frankfurt today.
It was an impending decision with Alexandra Popp, Germany’s third-most decorated goal-scorer who bagged 67 in 145 outings, retiring from international duty last year.
Gwinn, born in the town of Tettnang in the south of Baden-Wurttemberg, started her senior career with SC Freiburg before signing for her current employers Bayern Munich in 2019.
Capable of playing anywhere on the left flank, Gwinn has already made 57 appearances for the German women’s national team and registered 14 goals in the process.
Head coach Wuck also named defensive all-rounder and VfL Wolfsburg player Janina Minge as vice-captain if Gwinn is ever unavailable.
Germany will commence their UEFA Nations League campaign this Friday with a game against the Netherlands before hosting Austria in the Max-Morlock-Stadion on Tuesday next week.
