League A: Group 1

History-maker Giroud earns win over Austria

Scorers: Mbappé 56′, Giroud 65′.

Olivier Giroud made history as France worked hard to overcome a stubborn Austria side in Paris.

Didier Deschamps’ side were facing relegation if they lost tonight but instead they jump above Ralf Rangnick’s men but it took a while to break down their opponents with Patrick Pentz pulling off a sublime save to tip Aurélien Tchouaméni’s overhead kick on to the crossbar.

The lead eventually came in the 56th minute when Kylian Mbappé dancing past three Austria defenders before rifling a powerful effort past Pentz.

Giroud then doubled the advantage with a glancing header from Antoine Griezmann’s cross to make him the oldest goalscorer for the French national team at 35 years and 357 days. The strike also puts him to within two goals of Thierry Henry’s all-time top goalscoring record for Les Bleus (51).

It wasn’t all good news for Deschamps who lost defender Jules Koundé and goalkeeper Mike Maignan to injury.

Croats go top after Denmark win

Scorers: Sosa 49′, Majer 79′; Eriksen 77′.

Croatia move into top spot ahead of the final matchday after earning a deserved win over Denmark.

Stuttgart defender Borna Sosa broke the deadlock at the start of the second half when he slotted into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after the Danes had failed to clear a cross before Christian Eriksen equalised with a blistering shot from 25 yards out.

But the scoreline wasn’t level for long with Lovro Majer finding space at the edge of the box to squeeze a shot home immediately from kick-off to wrap up the victory.

League A: Group 2

De Bruyne inspires Belgium victory

Scorers: De Bruyne 11′, Batshuayi 38′; Moore 50′.

Wales are facing the drop from League A after a Kevin De Bruyne inspired Belgium brushed them aside.

The Man City midfielder placed a first-time shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after being set up by Michy Batshuayi for the opener.

The same pair combined for the second goal but this time it was De Bruyne who laid the ball on a plate for Batshuayi to poke into an empty net.

Wales did get back into it at the start of the second period with Kieffer Moore rising at the back post to nod home Brennan Johnson’s cross but it wasn’t enough to save Robert Page’s side.

Classy Dutch breeze past Poland

Scorers: Gakpo 14′, Bergwijn 59′.

Netherlands will go into the final matchday top of the table after coasting past Poland.

Louis van Gaal’s side found the lead early on with Cody Gakpo on hand to tap home from inside the six-yard box after a well-worked team move.

Steven Bergwijn edged them closer to that achievement with a placed finish into the bottom corner after playing a one-two with Vincent Janssen inside the area.

The Dutch will need just a point from their final game against Belgium to finish in first place.
