Girona planning to invest €20m in order to host Champions League football next season

Girona have been one of the biggest stories across European football this season. Michel Sanchez’s side have defied expectations, and then some, over the course of the campaign so far, and they currently sit top of the La Liga table, one point ahead of Real Madrid (having played a game more).

Although they have a very realistic chance of winning the league this season, the Catalan side’s main objective is to finish inside the top four, thus qualifying to play Champions League football in the 2024-25 campaign. At this stage, they are 11 points clear of fifth-placed Athletic Club with 17 matchdays to go.

It’s far from a foregone conclusion that Girona will secure UCL football, but club bosses are already making arrangements for this possibility. While their Montilivi stadium can host matches at the moment, but not at full capacity, Sport say that plans are being drawn up to ensure that it complies with UEFA requirements.

These plans are expected to begin as soon as possible. Construction stands are to be built in two areas of the stadium (Preferente and Gol Nord) and the entire project would cost in the region of €20m.

These are exciting times for Girona. If they can secure Champions League football, it would be a huge achievement, and they hope to have a stadium worthy of the competition by the time next season’s instalment kicks off.
