Girona sporting director Quique Cárcel has on Monday confirmed that the club made a conscious effort to bring in a member of the defensive ranks at Catalan rivals Barcelona over the summer.

The player in question? Eric García.

The name of Spanish international Eric of course took its place front and centre in the headlines at the Estadi Montilivi throughout the summer window.

This came amid widespread speculation that Girona were eager to bring the 23-year-old back to the club.

Eric spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Míchel’s side, establishing himself as one of La Liga’s standout performers.

Speaking during a press conference on Monday, Blanquivermells director Quique Cárcel, in turn, was drawn on the club’s alleged efforts to bring the ex-Manchester City man back.

And Cárcel, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, did not hesitate in confirming such endeavours, explaining:

“We wanted Eric to come back because he is a player who would have helped us to be more competitive and to define the coach’s game. It would have been an excellent signing for us and that is why we asked Barça for him. I think they did not want him to leave, but everyone knows how things are at home, it is a situation that they will know. I tried, but it was not possible.”
