Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Borussia Dortmund’s USA international attacking midfielder Giovanni Reyna (20) turned down the chance to play for Argentina’s national team before choosing the United States.

Son of former Sunderland and USA midfielder Claudio, Gio’s grandfather, Miguel – who moved to the United States in 1968, was Argentinian and also a professional footballer for Argentine heavyweight Independiente and Gio qualified to play for Argentina as a result. England, where he was born, and Portugal, through his mother, Danielle Egan – who also played for the US national team, were options too. Reyna explained:

“Yes, there were options in other countries but from the beginning, it was always clear to me that I wanted to play for the United States… It’s flattering when those countries come and show interest and contact you, but for me it was the United States the whole time”.

Reyna has four goals in 14 USA caps to date and will be part of the squad that faces England, Iran and Wales in Group B in the World Cup in Qatar.
