Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has admitted that he still harbours resentment and regret over team-mate Leonardo Bonucci’s controversial Milan move.
The 33-year-old stunned Italian football in the summer of 2017 when he completed a move from the champions to the Rossoneri.
But he remained for just one season, which included scoring on his return to Turin, before quickly moving back to Juve, where some have yet to forgive him.
In an excerpt from his upcoming autobiography Io, Giorgio, the Bianconeri veteran believes he could have prevented the entire situation had he been around at the time.
“His year at Milan was certainly a wrong choice because he was not at peace with himself, therefore wasn’t thinking properly,” Chiellini wrote.
“He was shaken for a thousand reasons. I was sorry about it because it all happened in the weeks [during the summer] when we didn’t see each other.
“I’m sure if it happened at another time I would have made him think about staying. Like [Antonio] Conte in July 2014, these things always happen when I’m not there.
“I spoke with Leo about everything. It was a move without logic from start to finish. I could have understood if he had joined Real Madrid.
“But to go to that Milan? Fortunately, fate wanted everything to come back into order as it should be.”
On the playing side, Bonucci has slotted back in seamlessly, providing a veteran presence after Chiellini was unfortunately ruled out for almost the entire season with a cruciate ligament injury.
