Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has revealed that he turned down a move to Tottenham in 2016 in order to sign for the Anfield outfit.

The Netherlands international was a man in demand after he was relegated with Newcastle that season and eventually joined the Reds in a deal worth €30m.

But the 27-year-old has claimed that he actually spoke with Mauricio Pochettino’s men before opting for Merseyside.

“I met Pochettino when I left Newcastle. I just felt Liverpool wanted to come to an agreement quickly,” said Wijnaldum.

“Tottenham have shown over the years the quality of their players and manager.

“I see Tottenham as a team like us, wanting to play good football.

“They are always looking for solutions in the game and play as we do.”

Wijnaldum actually scored the opening goal as Jürgen Klopp’s side went to Wembley on Saturday and beat Spurs 2-1.
