Gini Wijnaldum completed his move to French side PSG in the week and will now be able to fully focus on representing the Netherlands at the European Championships this summer.

The Dutchman bid a fond farewell to Liverpool and to the Anfield crowd back in May as he featured in our final game against Crystal Palace to help us qualify for the Champions League.

It was a fitting way for him to end his time on Merseyside and, in the weeks since, we’ve seen him seemingly looking set to join Barcelona before winding up signing a deal with the French side.

And, quoted by the Daily Mail in his pre-match press conference for the Netherlands’ game with Ukraine on Sunday, he explained his thinking behind the transfer:

“I made another choice. It was very difficult. I was negotiating with Barcelona for four weeks, and we never reached a final decision.

“Paris Saint-Germain were a bit better in making a decision. They were quicker. And the project that they have at PSG it really appealed to me.

“It was a difficult choice I have to be honest. I thought I would be moving to Barcelona because they were the only team who were really interested in me, but we did not reach an agreement together.

“PSG were much clearer in making that decision.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

A cynic might suggest that the reported offer of doubling his wages at PSG over Barcelona might have had something to do with it but, of course, you can never say that for sure.

One thing is certain, though, and that is Wijnaldum deserves whatever he gets after proving to be a really fine servant for Liverpool in the last few years.

A true champion, we look forward to seeing what he can do with PSG next season.
