Reports in the UK suggest that Napoli’s attempt to sign Scotland international Billy Gilmour is now over, as the Premier League side have concerns over their current options in midfield.
According to reports from the Express, Brighton have decided to pull out of negotiations with the Partenopei due to a number of injury concerns in their midfield department.
Matt O’Riley, who had been linked with a move to Atalanta before joining Brighton from Celtic, was forced off minutes into his Seagulls debut in the EFL Cup after a nasty challenge, which will likely keep him out for several months.
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler also decided to start Gilmour in their latest Premier League match, a 2-1 win over Manchester United. He also came off the bench in a 3-0 win over Everton on the opening weekend of the season.
Napoli had been hoping to secure a deal with Brighton to sign Gilmour for a fee in the region of €15m, but that move is looking increasingly unlikely to go through before the close of the summer transfer window.
Napoli are likely to officially announce the signing of Gilmour’s international teammate Scott McTominay on Friday and have also confirmed the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea on Thursday.
