Fifa president Gianni Infantino has insisted that world football’s governing body “strongly disapproves” of the new Super League.

Twelve of Europe’s biggest clubs shocked the globe on Sunday evening when they revealed that they were in the process of creating their own breakaway division to rival the Champions League.

Fifa put out a meek statement over the weekend, which many claimed didn’t go far enough in its condemnation of the idea.

But now Infantino, speaking at Uefa’s congress in Switzerland, has spoken out against the idea of a Super League.

“We can only and strongly disapprove of a Super League which is a closed shop, breakaway from current institutions.

“No doubt whatsoever of FIFA’s disapproval. Full support to UEFA.

“It is my task and our task to protect the European sports model, club competitions, national teams. If they choose to go their own way, they must live with their choice. They are either in or out. They cannot be half in and half out.”

There has though, been no confirmation from Infantino as to whether players playing in the Super League will be banned from the World Cup, as was Aleksandr Čeferin’s claim on Monday.
