Fifa president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that world football’s governing body will continue to produce a yearly video game even now their partnership with EA Sports has ended.
Fifa 23 was the final video game produced in conjunction with EA Sports, ending an association which began in 1994, after Fifa reportedly raised its licensing fee demand from $150m-a-year to $250m.
EA Sports will continue producing the franchise even without the Fifa name, and speaking at his re-election as president on Thursday, Infantino confirmed that Fifa plan to produce a rival game.
“The new Fifa game – the Fifa 25, 26, 27 and so on – will always be the best egame for any girl or boy, we will have news on this very soon,” he said.
Infantino was speaking at the Fifa congress in Kigali, Rwanda, where he was re-elected unopposed as president for another four-year term until 2027.
Earlier this week, Fifa announced plans for a 48-team World Cup to begin in 2026 and a new 32-team Club World Cup, which is set to commence in 2025.
And on Thursday, Infantino also revealed that plans for a women’s Club World Cup are also in the works, while also teasing a tweak to the offside rule, with VAR now being used in more than 100 countries.
“We are testing the offside rule to give advantage to the attacker,” he said.
“It will make football more attractive for the fans who are watching.”
