Gianni Infantino calls for one-month ceasefire in Ukraine-Russia conflict during FIFA World Cup | OneFootball

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called for a temporary ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia during the FIFA World Cup.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has carried on for a long time now, with the Russians already having been banned from taking part in the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. As the conflict rages on, Infantino has urged for a ceasefire to take place during the tournament.

The FIFA President was present during a lunch involving leaders of the major G20 economies and during that, he appealed for the two countries to bring about a temporary ceasefire and use the World Cup as a ‘positive trigger’ in their conflict.

“My plea to all of you, to think on a temporary ceasefire for one month for the duration of the World Cup, or at least the implementation of some humanitarian corridors or anything that could lead to the resumption of dialogue as a first step to peace.”

Infantino emphasised on the fact that football can be used as a means to bring about global peace in the world, in the hope that the tournament can act as a positive trigger for both Ukraine and Russia.

Infantino revealed that Ukraine are preparing to bid for the 2030 World Cup and that about 5.5 billion fans will be watching the tournament in Qatar this year, starting this week. The first game of the World Cup will see Qatar take on Ecuador on Sunday.
