Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to do everything possible to sign “one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Champions League-winning goalkeeper has confirmed he is leaving Paris Saint-Germain after being left out of the squad for last Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham.

PSG manager Luis Enrique defended his decision to drop the Italian, explaining that he needs a goalkeeper with a “different profile.”

“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success. I am disappointed and disheartened.” Donnarumma posted on social media last Tuesday.

When quizzed on whether Donnarumma should be a player area of focus for Ruben Amorim in the final weeks of the window, on the ‘Wayne Rooney Show’, Rooney said: “Yeah, I think it has to be.

“I go back to when we had Roy Carroll and Tim Howard in goal. I don't think there was 100 % trust from the defenders in front of the two goalkeepers. But the minute [Edwin] Van der Sar comes in and calms everything down, the defenders trust him a lot more.

“[Andre] Onana's come in, he's a fantastic keeper, but he certainly didn't fill us with confidence last season.

“Donnarumma is 26, he's one of the best keepers in the world, it'd be crazy if Man United don't go for him. I don't think he's a risk.

Donnarumma, whose contract with PSG expires next year, has also been strongly linked with Manchester City, amid uncertainty over the future of current No1 Ederson, who is reportedly considering a move to Galatasaray.
