Gianluigi Donnarumma expects PSG to decide undisputed number one | OneFootball

Gianluigi Donnarumma has stressed his happiness at Paris Saint-Germain and revealed that he expects his competition for minutes with Keylor Navas to come to an end this summer.

Widely heralded as one of the game's best goalkeepers off the back of winning the Player of the Tournament award at Euro 2020, Donnarumma joined PSG on a free transfer last year but has not been the undisputed starter many expected him to be.

The Italian has started just 16 Ligue 1 games this season, instead sharing the goalkeeping duties with 35-year-old Navas, who has been afforded 20 league appearances this year.

Navas is a top-ten goalkeeper himself but, at 35, is hardly a long-term option in between the posts and Donnarumma told AFP that he is expecting to be the undisputed starter next season.

“I want to stay at PSG," he explained. "I am happy with my first trophy in the Paris Saint-Germain shirt. I am very proud to belong to this club, which is very ambitious and always aiming higher. When I arrived, I didn’t feel the pressure from the European Championships, although it wasn’t easy to settle in.

“It has not been an easy season, I know I can do more, I played half of the matches and I could not give my best, but I am convinced I can give much more to this team and this club.

"I don’t think it will be like that (competition for minutes) next season. The club will make choices. I have a great relationship with Keylor, we are two good guys, we understand the situation, but it was difficult for him too.

“Let’s say we made it, with the help of the whole group and with the understanding between us.”

L'Equipe state that PSG have, unsurprisingly, chosen Donnarumma as their starter next season, with plans already in motion to part ways with Navas, Sergio Rico, Marcin Bulka and Alphonse Areola.

Navas, who is under contract until 2024, is expected to command a fee of around €10m (£8.5m).
