Speaking after Ghana’s trilling 3-2 win over Group H rivals South Korea in Qatar, Ghana left-back Gideon Mensah, whose cross provided the winner for Mohammed Kudus, was positive on Ghana’s chances in their final group stage game with Uruguay.
The Auxerre defender said: “Ghanaians should expect this [type of performance] and more from us. The Uruguay game is very important. Beating South Korea is going to help us, obviously, but then, if we lose against Uruguay, it would be a bit worrying so we need to do more to win.”
Ghana need a win to be sure of making the last 16 in what has become something of a grudge match with Uruguay after their quarter-final meeting in 2010. A game in which Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez famously blocked a last-minute shot with his hand to make sure the game went to penalties, which Ghana then lost. A draw would also be enough for Ghana should South Korea not beat Portugal in the group’s other game.
