Ghana are out of the 2022 World Cup.

The omens looked good for the African nation going into the final round of fixtures after their impressive 3-2 win over South Korea.

That put the Black Stars in pole-position to reach the last-16 of the tournament. If they had avoided defeat against Uruguay, progress would almost certainly have been achieved.

Instead, Ghana were on the receiving end of a 2-0 loss against Uruguay, who’re their arch enemies ever since the quarter-final clash between the two countries at the 2010 World Cup.

Luis Suarez‘s handball is still a sore subject among the Ghanaian people and he remains public enemy number one.

The only solace for the Black Stars is that Uruguay and Suarez didn’t reach the knockout stage either.

They too were left heartbroken after Hwang-hee Chan’s late goal against Portugal eventually confirmed South Korea as Group H runner-up.

Suarez’s tears on the bench were a source of joy for the Ghanaians.

Ghanaian legend Asamoah Gyan was not happy with the team’s performance vs Uruguay

But while a number of Ghana fans in Qatar celebrated Uruguay’s misery, despite being knocked out themselves (including those inside the Al Janoub Stadium, as you’ll see below), one man associated with the nation was not happy at all.

Gyan, who infamously missed the penalty after Suarez’s handball in 2010, could not hide his anger when speaking about the game.

While working as pundit, the former Sunderland striker laid into the Ghana team for what he saw as a truly inept display.

An emotional Gyan, who made it clear he was “very upset”, said on numerous occasions: “You cannot lose a game like this.”

The poor guy knew his country had a great chance to get full revenge for 2010, but blew it.

Had Gyan in his prime been involved it could have been a different story, because Ghana really lacked a presence up top – even with Inaki Williams leading the line.

Gyan – who’s currently a free agent having most recently represented Legon Cities FC – used to captain the Black Stars and is their all-time leading scorer with 51 goals from 109 appearances.

Six of those goals came at the World Cup, which makes him the highest African scorer in the tournament’s 92-year history.

Imagine Gyan in his pomp with the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Thomas Partey around him? It could have been so, so special.
