According to a report by The Athletic, Getafe are to profit from Mason Greenwood’s (22) €31.7 million transfer from Manchester United to Olympique de Marseille due to an unusual clause in their loan agreement for the Englishman.
Greenwood was on loan at the Spanish club last season where he made 36 appearances across all competitions before he returned to United at the end of the campaign. However, as part of his loan deal, Getafe would receive 20% of any fee United would receive for selling the forward.
As The Athletic explains, with United also inserting a significant sell-on clause into their deal with Marseille, Getafe will also receive a share of whatever fee United earn if Marseille choose to part ways with their new signing.
The transfer of Greenwood to Les Phocéens has been a highly contentious issue in France and the city at large. Greenwood in 2022 was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. These charges were discontinued in 2023. The player has denied all allegations against him.
The Marseille mayor and domestic and sexual violence support groups have all criticised the club for progressing with the transfer, while a section of the supporters attempted to apply pressure on the management to drop their interest with the social media campaign #GreenwoodNotWelcome. This was met with a counter-movement #GreenwoodWelcome.
