Flamengo have confirmed that Gerson has sustained a hamstring injury that will rule him out of Tuesday’s Copa Libertadores with LDU Quito.
The Rubro-Negro posted a tweet that read: “The athlete Gerson underwent an examination, which found a lesion in the posterior of the left thigh. He started treatment.”
It also means the the midfielder will not feature in Saturday’s Campeonato Carioca semi-final first leg against Volta Redonda.
Gerson played all 90 minutes in the 4-1 win over Chilean side Unión La Calera in midweek.
That left Flamengo sitting pretty on top of Group G with six points from their opening two games.
Manager Rogério Ceni will now need to find an alternative plan for his midfield for the trip to Ecuador, as the 23-year-old has established himself as an ever-present in recent seasons.
