Despite being the subject of European rumours, linked to Benfica as well as several top Premier League sides, Flamengo midfielder Gerson has revealed that he will renew his Flamengo contract.
Gerson is currently under contract until 2023 but is in absolutely no hurry to return to Europe as he’s more than satisfied to be a star in his home city.
“Of course, I will continue here. I have a contract with Flamengo, I am very happy here, my family is happy,” he told Globo.
“If I screw up, I’ll even renew it and nobody will know (laughs).
“As I always say, I returned to enjoy playing football. I returned to my home, close to my family and friends.
“I will continue working hard and focusing on Flamengo. The championship (Brasileirão) will start shortly.
“It’s my focus for us to be able to celebrate more titles, God willing.”
Flamengo will now get ready for the start of the Brasileirão. Their first match back will be against Atlético-MG at the Maracanã on 9 August.
Their return to the Copa Libertadores group stage will take place on 17 September against Independiente del Valle in Ecuador.
