Steven Gerrard’s cousin Anthony has been sacked by Oldham Athletic after an unsavoury row with supporters on Twitter.
The 32-year-old centre-back called one fan a “weirdo” before telling another to “go and throw shite at yourself”.
The arguments took place at the end of June, and Gerrard subsequently removed himself from the social media platform.
“Listen people am coming off Twitter for the remainder of my contract at OAFC,” he wrote.
“There’s no point in replying because I won’t get it. Ciao, Au Revior and Goodbye.”
Gerrard still had 12 months left to run on his deal at Boundary Park but on Thursday, the Latics confirmed his contract had been terminated due to gross misconduct.
“Oldham Athletic can confirm the club have terminated the contract of Anthony Gerrard,” read the statement on the club’s official website.
“His contract was terminated for gross misconduct arising from certain social media posts which brought the club into disrepute.
“In accordance with Anthony Gerrard’s contract and Football League procedure, he had 14 days to appeal the decision, no appeal was lodged.
“As a result his contract with the club has now ended.”
“It’s all about the club ultimately,” added Oldham boss Frankie Bunn.
“No one person is bigger than the club and that’s the way it should be.”
But Gerrard didn’t have to wait long to find a new club. On the same day he was dismissed by Oldham, he was offered a contract with Carlisle United which will run until January 2019.
Gerrard began his career at Everton and has previously played for the likes of Walsall, Cardiff City, Hull City, Huddersfield Town and Shrewsbury Town.
