A derby win at Parkhead back in December put Rangers ahead in the Premiership title race momentarily. But a downfall after the winter break hit the Bears badly and the season, though suspended indefinitely amid the COVID-19 outbreak, have little to offer in terms of the title race with Celtic having a sound lead at the top of the standings.

Steven Gerrard reconstructed his Rangers side over the past two years and splashed the cash to rope in several notable signings. He secured the services of veteran Jermain Defoe to challenge Alfredo Morelos for the ‘number 9’ role, whereas a loan deal for Hibernian’s Florian Kamberi back in January was supposed to add more depth to their forward department in their bid to demolish Celtic’s domestic dominance.

The Gers, however, were linked to a winter move for Egypt’s youth sensation Mostafa Mohamed, who scored the most number of goals in November’s Under 23s African Cup of Nations. He guided his nation to the crown and was valued at around £3m by his boyhood side Zamalek.

What Happened In Winter

Although the Light Blues played down the talks and settled for Kamberi, Mohamed’s former coach Milutin Sredojevic has claimed that Gerrard called him personally to know about the Egyptian.

“Zamalek made it very difficult for the transfer to go through because they don’t want to be looked at as a selling club. So the transfer never happened, but Steven Gerrard was very keen indeed for the move to go through. Mostafa is a player with a bright future. He is an incredible talent who will, of course, go to Europe one day soon.”

The above was revealed the Serbian (as quoted by the Daily Record) who was dismissed by Zamalek in less than four months due to a dismal run of form.

Why Rangers Should Reignite Interest In The Summer

Mohamed, meanwhile, has scored eight times this term in 24 outings and earned two senior caps for Egypt. His numbers will improve with time, but the promise exhibited already at such a young age should see him making it big in the European circuit within the next couple of years.

Kamberi has done nothing wrong since plying his trade to Ibrox. However, the growing interest in Morelos might eventually force the Gers to part ways with their high-flying Colombian. Jermain Defoe, 37, is at the twilight of his glittering career, and therefore, an overhaul in the frontline is on the cards as soon as the current campaign reaches its conclusion. Rangers should reignite interest in Mohamed before his valuation reaches a peak.
