WE CAN STILL RISE NOW…

It’s the day all, or at least most of Scotland has been waiting for as Steve Clarke’s Scotland side take part in the opening match of Euro 2024 in Munich against the host nation Germany.

The Tartan Army, myself included, has arrived in Munich and making the most of the occasion while enjoying friendly relations with our hosts, who all seem to be loving the sound, colour and spectacle of the Scottish support with bagpipes, tartan and plenty of singing. And of Munich is famous for beer then there’s likely to be a shortage as the Tartan Army seems to be on a mission to drink the city dry.

Anyone remember when Scotland played USSR at the World Cup in the 1980s the Tartan Army’s banner…

Still there’s not a hint of any trouble whatsoever and no chance of the Scotland fans singing German bombers, which we’ll no doubt hear from the Land of Hope and Glory mob down the road.

Team News

Steve Clarke has a full squad to choose from and will be setting out his side to make the match as difficult as possible for the Germans.  “Respect everyone, fear no-one” is the message from the Scotland manager and if his side get a result this evening those words will be Scotland t-shirt almost immediately.

Steve Clarke is likely to give the gloves to Angus Gunn and have a back three of Kieran Tierney, Ryan Porteous and Jack Hendry. The two wing-backs will be the captain Andy Robertson and Celtic’s Anthony Ralston. In midfield Celtic captain Callum McGregor will be joined by Scott McTominay, John McGinn and Ryan Christie while Che Adams will get the nod as Scotland striker. There’s plenty of goal threat in that front five and they will also be strong defensively.

Expect James Forrest to be introduced if Scotland are chasing a goal in the last half hour perhaps alongside Lawrence Shankland.

Match Officials

French referee Clement Turpin will have the whistle this evening.

UEFA have confirmed that Clement Turpin will referee the showpiece opener. Turpin is assisted by Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages, with François Letexier the fourth official. The video assistant referee is Jérôme Brisard.

The French referee will be hoping that his performance isn’t the subject of discussion. The 42-year-old refereed five matches across the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, including Brazil’s last-16 victory over South Korea in Qatar.

Kick off-time

The action gets underway at 8pm (Celtic Park time) bit there’s going to be plenty to enjoy ahead of that so tune in early if you’re watching from home.

Where to watch

The Germany v Scotland opening match of Euro 2024 takes place at the Munich Football Arena and is available to watch on STV and ITV.

Score Prediction

A goalless draw will be a nice wee present for Calmac who turns 31 today, although a late winner from the likes of James Forrest would really put the icing of the birthday cake. C’mon Scotland!
