German women’s national team ecstatic after massive win in Bremen: “A perfect German evening!”

The German women’s national team continue to cruise ahead of July’s UEFA Women’s European Championship this coming July in Switzerland. On Friday evening, Christian Wück’s Frauennationalmannschaft played their final home pre-tournament match in Bremen. A 4-0 win over the Netherlands in the Nations League fixture keeps the DFB-Frauen on a hot streak.

Wück’s team have won four straight in convincing fashion. A 4-1 win over Austria in February was followed up by 0-4 and 6-1 thrashings of Scotland during the March international break. A crowd of 32,348 spectators at the Weser Stadion last night cheered on their Mädels as the Germans rushed out to a 3-0 halftime lead. The German footballing anthem “Oh wie ist das schön” rang out long before the halftime whistle.

The German women seek to re-establish their once unrivaled dominance on the European women’s footballing scene. Prior to the 2017 Women’s European Championship, Germany captured seven straight European titles. It was none other than the Dutch who broke that streak eight years ago. Last night’s win might serve as a good omen.

Though Germany captured Olympic Gold in 2016, a new European or World Championship star for the DFB-tricot has not come. The two-time World Champions came up short in the 2019 and 2023 Women’s World Cup and faltered against England in the 2022 European Championship Final.

The scorer of the opening goal in last night’s win, Linda Dallman, effectively concurred with the “Oh wie ist das schön” (“Oh how beautiful it is“) spirit. So too did Wück.

Every player enjoyed being on the pitch,” Dallmann – as quoted by Kicker – noted after the thoroughly dominant performance. “It was the best home game we’ve played in Germany thus far.

The support in the stadium was extraordinary,” Wück added. “It was a perfect German evening. It was the most consistent game [of my tenure]. The team is growing together. We’re on the right track.”
