The German women’s national team delivered dominant performance in the final home fixture before this July’s UEFA Women’s European Championship last night. DFB-captain Giuliua Gwinn was quick to credit the support of a sizable crowd when speaking in the mixed zone last night. Once again, plenty of Germans (32,398 in Bremen) came out to cheer their team on.
The German Frauennationalmannschaft has received decent support this season. In late October, 26,631 live supporters made it to Duisburg to watch long-time squad captain Alexandra Popp officially hand her armband over to Gwinn whilst also commemorating the national team retirement of Merle Frohms and Marina Hegering.
Crowds in Bochum (December, 15,125), Nürnberg (February, 14,394), and Wolfsburg (16,102) also counted as excellent support. Internationally, Fan Clubs traveled to follow the team on trips to London’s Wembley, Zürich’s Letzigrund, and Dundee’s Tannerdice. On the domestic level, the Women’s DFB Pokal drew massive crowds in Hamburg (March, 57,000) and Köln (45,156).
Gwinn specifically noted that the support helped the DFB-Mädels hit the ground running. Confidence never wavered as the Christian Wück’s team rushed out to an insurmountable halftime lead in for the third consecutive match.
“It was quite the moment when we pulled up in the bus and saw all the German flags waving outside the stadium,” Gwinn told Sky Germany. “To hear the noise as we headed out onto the pitch and to feel the vibe. That carried us.
“That touches one and enables one to get that extra percent [of effort] out,” Gwinn continued. “I think it was the perfect final home game before the European Championship.“
