German referee had a mixed evening in charge of Inter’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid yesterday evening.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who argue that the official got the major decisions right but that he could have had more control over the match.

The first major decision the Brych had to make was when Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella appealed for a penalty after going down under the challenge of Real defender Dani Carvajal.

The referee adjudged that there was almost no contact in it and did not point to the spot, feeling that the 24-year-old had simply lost his balance.

Later in the half, Real winger Vinicus went over in the Nerazzurri penalty area under what looked to be a clumsy challenge from Denzel Dumfries.

On closer inspection there once again appeared to be very little contact if any, and the German official did not award a penalty to the home side although he also did not book the Brazilian for diving.

The last significant incident of the night came in the form of a sending-off for Barella, who reacted to a rough shoulder-to-shoulder challenge by Real defender Eder Militaro by hitting out at the Brazilian’s calf.

Brych took the advice of his VAR and showed Barella a straight red card for the reaction, while he let Militao off with just a yellow for his challenge.
