England midfielder Georgia Stanway didn’t hold back during her initiation as a Bayern Munich player, picking ‘Sweet Caroline’ to sing in front of the group less than two weeks after the Lionesses beat Germany in the final of Euro 2022 at Wembley.

‘Sweet Caroline’ has become an unofficial anthem for both England’s men’s and women’s teams in over the last couple of years and was repeatedly played after Lionesses matches throughout the tournament. Fans often stayed after the final whistle to join in.

Stanway opted to leave Manchester City at the end of her contract earlier in the summer, signing a three-year deal with an ambitious Bayern looking to establish itself as top dog in Germany and make progress in the Champions League.

Singing in front of the rest of the squad is common throughout the world of football when a player joins a new team and Bayern are not different. Clearly not worried about making things awkward, Stanway stood on a chair and started belting out the tune to cheers and laughs from her teammates.

The 23-year-old was important for Manchester City since being a teenager, making her debut at 16 and becoming a first-team regular by 17. She helped the club win the WSL in 2016, as well as six domestic cups. She first played the Lionesses in 2018 and has been a key player since 2019.

Stanway was not alone in leaving City for a new challenge abroad, with Caroline Weir and Lucy Bronze taking similar paths to joins Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.
