Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers took to Twitter to react to his side’s 1-0 win over fellow promotion contenders Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The Owls went top of the table with the victory over the Pilgrims, with Callum Paterson’s seventh-minute strike securing a crucial three points and moving them above their opponents on goal difference.

Darren Moore’s side now sit six points clear of third-placed Ipswich Town after their sixth consecutive league win, while it also extends their unbeaten run to 22 games in all competitions.

Byers made his comeback as a substitute in the FA Cup last weekend after two weeks out with a foot injury and was at the heart of the action on his return to the starting line-up in this one.

The 26-year-old controversially had a goal ruled out for offside in the second half, when Lee Gregory was deemed to have been in an offside position and interfering with play.

But it did not affect the outcome and after the game, Byers shared his reaction with the supporters on his Twitter account.

Wednesday are back in action in their FA Cup replay against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday night, before another huge clash next weekend as they travel to face Ipswich at Portman Road.

The Verdict

It was an excellent win for Wednesday against the Pilgrims.

The Owls underlined their promotion credentials with an impressive performance and it was no surprise that it coincided with the return of Byers and captain Barry Bannan to the starting line-up.

Byers has established himself as a key player with his quality in midfield and the difference he makes to Wednesday when available is evident.

He was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet against Argyle, but now he is back fit again, his partnership with Bannan and Will Vaulks could be integral to the Owls’ automatic promotion prospects.
