Despite having a large amount of money to spend over the summer and bringing in a talented head coach in Wouter Vrancken, Gent have been largely disappointing. Of the summer signings, only Max Dean has really shone. They had the finances to put together a squad that could compete for a title, but it is highly unlikely that this will be the case. The past few seasons have seen the side compete in play off two and there is a strong possibility this will happen again this year.
With Dean now out for the season, scoring goals could be the issue for Gent. Their second top scorer, Israeli midfielder Omri Gandelman is attracting interest from across Europe. One star player so far has been Davy Roef, who has been excellent in goal, even if he probably expected not to be called upon as often this season.
Transfer needs
Without Dean, the club needs a goal scorer. Andri Gudjohnsen has so far not looked ready to fill the boots of both Hugo Cuypers and Tarik Tissoudali who departed in 2024. There are rumours they may go for Adriano Bertaccini of Sint Truiden, with the forward having impressed with 11 goals so far this season. He would certainly be a good signing, although his efficiency means that Gent would need to create plenty of chances for him.
Gent could then benefit from just getting the best out of the players they already have. If they lose Gandelman they could sign another midfielder, but they have already brought in former Cercle Brugge man Leonardo Lopes. While operating deeper than Gandelman, he could allow the likes of Atsuki Ito and Pieter Gerkens to push further forward. One player that should benefit is Hungarian youngster Zalan Vancsa. The 20-year-old has struggled for game time on loan from Lommel.
Vrancken is under pressure, especially following the 1-0 defeat in the Conference League to Larne. A poor start to 2025 could see the Buffaloes hierarchy make a switch at head coach. Whoever replaces him would be expected to secure a top six finish and European football for next season.
