It seems like a Sokratis Papastathopoulos return to Genoa could be back on the cards, as he terminates his contract with Arsenal.

Chris Wheatley initially reported on Wednesday morning that Arsenal and Sokratis have an agreement to terminate his contract. Arsenal have now posted an announcement to confirm the decision.

Di Marzio report that Genoa are back in for Sokratis, despite previously appearing to move onto other targets. They’ve contacted him again to try and convince him to join, and the defender is still keeping his options open at this stage.

Earlier in the month, it seemed Sokratis had decided on a move to La Liga with Real Betis, with Genoa forced to look elsewhere. However, Betis are now unlikely to sign the Arsenal centre-back, as they just don’t have the money for a deal right now.

Fenerbahce were another club recently linked to Sokratis, but Chris Wheatley wrote that it was ‘never on’ as the club never even made an approach to sign the defender.

Sokratis’ options are thinning as a result, and a return to Genoa might suddenly look a lot more appealing. They were reportedly his initial preference at the start of the window, after spending a couple of seasons with them earlier on in his career.

There’s still a week and a half until the January deadline, but it’s up to Sokratis to sort out his future now. Given the contract termination, it’s not Arsenal’s job to sort his next club out anymore.
