Genoa CEO Andres Blazquez insists his club must find a replacement before granting Albert Gudmundsson leave amidst Inter Milan and Fiorentina interest.

The Iceland international was one of the finest performers in Serie A last term. His brilliant displays guided the Grifone towards a safe mid-table finish on their return to the top flight.

The 27-year-old earned himself the admiration of several clubs between Italy and abroad.

Earlier in the summer, Inter emerged as the ultimate favorites to secure the striker’s signature.

However, Genoa have been asking for 30 million euros to part ways with the prized asset. On the other hand, the Italian champions still have to offload some of the deadwood to make way for new arrivals.

In the meantime, Fiorentina took the lead in the race for Gudmundsson’s services. The Viola presented the Ligurians with a concrete offer.

However, these have been a busy few days for Genoa on the market. The club has just sold Mateo Retegui to Atalanta who were desperate to sign a replacement for the injured Gianluca Scamacca.

Genoa Won’t Sell Inter Milan Target Albert Gudmundsson Before Finding Competent Replacement

Hence, the club cannot afford to part ways with another key striker before signing a replacement.

This is the message that Genoa CEO Blasquez conveyed in his most recent media appearance.

“We only make transfers if it is convenient for us and if we already have a replacement,” explained the Grifone official in his interview with Il Secolo XIX via FcInterNews.

“Genoa rejected the offers from Fiorentina because we do not have a replacement up to the task. Therefore, we cannot do without Albert.

“We do not want to sell him, there are no economic reasons. It is a technical issue, he is an important player for us.”

This delay could play to Inter’s advantage, allowing the club additional time to raise funds if they still intend to sign the Icelandic star.
